Sadly, they are about the same as if you DO play the lottery. Playing the lottery is a tax for people who are bad at math. Having said that, I will say that The Mr. and I do play a state lottery (not our state which does not have one, but we are near the border of two other states, so we can take a 45 min., scenic drive to buy tickets). So we view it as our (only) entertainment. We don't eat out, or go to movies, or buy expensive things. But we get a kick out of planning what we would do if we win big.
