I was excited to be asked by TOS Crew to use and review IXL.com. IXL.com is an interesting online curriculum that comprises both math (the Online Math Membership, for grades pre-K to 12) and language arts (the Online Language Arts Membership,
for grades 2-4). It was wonderful to receive (free of charge) a year’s
membership to both (normally $79 for a year for one subject/$129 for
both; or $9.95 per month per subject/$15.95 for both). Since Princess Magpie is too young for the Language program and Princess Belle is in Grade six and really needed the help with Math, we used IXL.com work on their math skills.
As I mentioned, IXL.com is offers math and language arts practice for grades K-12. Each grade level is adjusted to meet state standards making it easy to ensure your student is getting practice in the areas that they need to. The website lists each skill very specifically so that you can pick the topics you would like them to work on. They also offer detailed reports on how the student is progressing.
Membership Benefits:
We all know that the best way to master Math is to keep practicing, but with Math being a trouble spot for Princess Belle she finds that solving problems repetitively gets boring and this is where I found IXL.com to be a big help! I didn't have to push her to do her math, she enjoyed the program and looked forward to getting at it. The practices are presented in fun and colorful pictures. Even Princess Magpie had a lot of fun with it. She was excited to be able to answer the questions and asked to go on the program every day!
As for me, I really liked that there were unlimited questions in over 2,000 skills. I LOVED how you have access to each Math level. When Princess Magpie needed to move on to the next level, there was no waiting... she could just jump on over. I liked getting weekly email updates on my child's progress. It was nice to see in writing how they were doing, and how much time they were spending on it. I LOVED awards and certificates that we can print for each milestone. My kids love that sort of reinforcement. I liked that when my girls got a wrong answer they were explained WHY it is wrong. My children LOVED using it!!! If you like knowing what your children know. Checking to make sure there are no learning gaps. Then IXL is the program for you!!
IXL also offers an online language arts membership (2th-4th). Questions asked gradually increase in difficulty as the child answers more and more correctly. I have not used this program with girls but I would love to try it in the future!
Overall, I feel that this program is a good option for homeschool kids and public/private school kids to practice math and language arts skills. We will continue to use this program especially with Princess Magpie.
