Moving Hacks

Here are some tips and ideas I have found for making moving easier.

  1. Use Storage Bins For Seasonal Items.  This way, once you’re moved in, you can simply transfer the plastic bins to your closet or basement without having to unpack their contents.
  2. Keep Screws & Bolts Organized.  If you have to dismantle any furniture for your move, don’t forget to keep all the loose screws and bolts organized! Put them in plastic baggies and label them so you know which piece of furniture they're for and don’t lose any. I actually attach the baggies to the furniture with packing tape on the back or inside a drawer.
  3. Purge your stuff.  As you go through your things, this is the time to see what can be donated or chucked altogether.
  4. Pack an overnight bag containing all the essentials.  Chances are, you’ll be too tired to unpack your things. You’ll want your essentials within easy access.
  5. Find free moving boxes.  Best places to find boxes are the ‘free’ section on Craigslist, grocery and clothing stores, liquor stores and warehouse style stores.
  6. Label boxes with rooms as well as what is in them.  Then, when you arrive at your new home, unpack BY ROOM. The unpacking process will feel more manageable.
  7. Remember to label the SIDES of the boxes, not the tops. This way, you’ll be able to identify them even if they’re stacked.
  8. Pack up the kitchen first.  The kitchen is actually the most complicated room to pack, especially with all of those oddly shaped mixers and cooking spatulas and food processors.
  9. Wrap your breakables (dishes, glasses, etc.) in clothing to save on bubble wrap.
  10. Pack a first-night box.  I always do this!  Pack yourself a “first night” box with all your toiletries, some clothes, and anything you’ll need the following morning such as dishes and silverware, coffee perk, and towels.
  11. Use a Rubber Band to Keep Your Front Door Unlocked, when loading the moving truck.  Wrap a rubber band around one doorknob and stretch it around your door to wrap the other end on the opposite knob. This will keep your door from accidentally getting shut and locking you out in case someone forgets to keep it unlocked!
  12. Cover the openings of your toiletries with saran wrap, then put the tops back on.
  13. Pack plates vertically, like records. They’ll be less likely to break.
  14. Make sure everything is completely packed before your friends show up to help you move.
  15. Change your address at least two weeks prior to moving.
